Not Just a Mom, But A Mentoring Mom

By

From the first moment a mother looks into her newborn’s precious eyes, she feels overwhelmed by the tiny miracle she holds. In awe she feels like the luckiest person alive to be blessed with such a beautiful baby. Then over time, the overwhelming feeling enters her mind: she is responsible to raise, love and care for this tiny child.  She is responsible to teach and direct her bundle of joy through the stages of life.  She is going to need guidance from the One who knows this child best.  She turns to God and begins with thanksgiving for this new blessing and prays He will help her to raise this child in a way that would be pleasing to Him.

If you are a mom or someday dream of being a mom, I want to encourage you to see that there’s so much more to your job than just being a mom.  God has called us to be personal mentors to our children. He has given us the difficult yet amazing job to guide, love, respect, listen to, and encourage our children.  I don’t know about you, but when I think of these words I see how they are all connected to what a mentor does.  How we raise our precious girls and mighty boys will make an impact on future relationships they will someday have.

Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it.  (Proverbs 22:6)

I feel deeply blessed to be a homeschooling mom to my two boys as I have watched them develop a love for the Lord.  Each day, God opens doors for teachable moments and funny thing is, some of those moments come from them! Oh, the faith of a child!  Whether your children are in school, daycare, at home or all grown up, God will give you mentoring opportunities.  Sadly, there are times we miss these opportunities due to the business of life. However, if we slow down to listen to our children’s voices, we can begin to mentor them.  I can say from personal experience that the times I have chosen to stop and give them my undivided attention, God has given me a mentoring moment.  During those moments God has allowed me to see inside my children’s hearts, what their dreams are and what their struggles are.  It’s not about authority but humility; it’s about guiding them down the road to victory through Christ.  At the end of a mentoring moment I ask myself, “Did they grow spiritually in anyway?” and “Did I show humility or authority?”

The Bible is full of guidance and encouragement for mentoring moms. Soaking in the Living Word will help us to become the Christian parents we are meant to be.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.  It is Gods way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do.  (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Being a mom is challenging and rewarding. Today I encourage you to face those challenges and celebrate the rewards with all your heart. Besides you’re not just a mom but a mentoring mom!

Blessings,
